Comfort Series

Statement
Around the world blankets are used to bring comfort to the cold and weary. Small children love their blankets, the elderly find warmth under a comforter which might represent the memories of a long life, and humans of all ages have used the beauty of the handmade quilt to adorn their beds (a place of comfort and pleasure) and walls. I am curious about representing these blankets of warmth and comfort in art. Art quilts are pieces of beauty where the needle was used as a painter’s brush to create unique expressions of the quilt artist.

As a child growing up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the United States, I found great comfort in a quilt given to my grandparents as a wedding gift. My great-grandmother made two of these special blankets, and one became very special to me as I knew it not only represented her love with each handmade stitch, but also represented various articles of clothing worn by her and her family. I would not even think of visually reproducing these special blankets on a canvas, but I want to evoke the warmth and the love with which they were made. In my own way, I translate the meaning of comfort as given by the quilt to my work surface.

Each painting shares a great deal of love, a part of my heritage and similar qualities which go into quilt and comfort making. I wish for you to find comfort in these expressions.
