Horizon Series

Statement
This body of work began in 2005 after I moved to southern England. This was the first time I had lived on an island and I found it fascinating. Spending time along the Channel Coast was very inspirational as were the beautiful English gardens. The colors and light were so intense and moving.

Being on an island had me constantly wondering what was beyond. The other side of the Channel was France, just beyond the heath from my cottage was a small English village, just across the North Sea was Belgium and across the Atlantic was home. I found myself staring at the horizons and wondering what lay beyond? What kind of lives did people live there? What was the landscape like? I wondered how knowing these things would influence my life and my paintings. It also made me consider if I would be happy on an island and constantly wondering what else the world held for me beyond the shore. But most important the shore gave me a horizon line to bring these wonderings to fruitation in my work. Because the light was so good in Southern England, intense colors would bombard my mind. So I painted what my mind’s eye shared with me.

Living in England was a real life changing event for me and I find myself continuing to explore what the horizon means in my painting. Yes, the way I am seeing the horizon is changing since my return to the US, but it is moving deeper and deeper into what it means on a large continent. So it is morphing now, and this body of work continues.
