Artist Statement

I have been interested in creative endeavors since I was a child, but from an early age I was encouraged to pursue more “practical” goals by the rural community in which I grew up. In college I shocked my friends and family by changing my major to interior design, which is a blend of practical and creative skills. It was not until my early 40s that I moved from the drafting board to the art studio, and finally started what I had not been able to learn in my youth.

At first I only allowed myself to render those pre-drafted interior perspectives with exciting mediums like pastels. That quickly changed and I was soon having a great time with all kinds of mediums and support surfaces. Today, I enjoy mixed medium works along with pure acrylic paintings, mainly on canvas. I find working on a larger scale is freeing for me, yet smaller pieces present excellent challenges from time to time.

I have been fortunate to be able to move around the United States and Europe over the last 25 years, and my travels have greatly influenced my work. I find a great deal of creativity in travel and learning about new cultures. I find creative sparks in many ways, such as nature, literature, travel, music, art supplies, found objects, textiles, architectural materials and even in natural and personal disasters. Just about every thing and every experience is up for grabs where my creativity is concerned.

I am very interested in the way people view my art and their participation in the presentation of a painting. While I may see a piece in one way, my viewer may wish to view it in another. For this reason I sign my works on the side, so it can be hung in any way appropriate for the purchaser.

My work means different things to each individual viewer. I am always willing to share with a purchaser how I view a work, but I also encourage people to articulate what it is they like about a painting. This is another way I like to encourage participation in viewing artwork.

Like Plato, I wish for my art to provide a place of peaceful contemplation for the viewer. I know from experience this is not always the case, since we all see the world through different lenses. My greatest wish is for you to enjoy the view.
